Predictive vs. Progressive vs. Preview Dialing: Which Mode Fits Your Team?

Predictive vs. Progressive vs. Preview Dialing: Which Mode Fits Your Team?

Every outbound dialer offers some mix of predictive, progressive and preview modes. They all place calls for your agents, but they make very different trade-offs between talk time, abandoned calls and how prepared the agent is when someone answers. Picking the wrong mode is one of the most common reasons a campaign underperforms.

Preview dialing: the agent decides when to call

In preview mode the agent sees the lead's record first — notes, previous calls, account value — and clicks to dial when ready. Nothing is dialed until a person is waiting.

  • Best for: high-value B2B calls, account management, collections with complex histories, callbacks.
  • Strength: zero abandoned calls and a well-prepared agent on every conversation.
  • Weakness: the slowest mode. Agents also listen to every ring, voicemail and disconnected number themselves.

Progressive dialing: one line per free agent

Progressive (sometimes called power) dialing calls the next number automatically the moment an agent becomes available — one call per agent at a time. The agent skips the manual click, but the system never dials ahead of capacity.

  • Best for: small and mid-size teams, warm leads, campaigns where every answered call must reach a live agent.
  • Strength: no abandoned calls and far less idle time than preview.
  • Weakness: agents still wait through ringing and unanswered calls.

Predictive dialing: dial ahead of your agents

A predictive dialer uses live statistics — answer rate, average talk time, how many agents are about to finish a call — to dial more lines than there are free agents. Unanswered calls, busy signals and voicemail are filtered out, so agents mostly hear live people.

  • Best for: large lists, lower answer rates, teams of roughly 10+ agents where the statistics have enough data to work with.
  • Strength: the highest talk time per agent hour — often several times more than preview.
  • Weakness: if the dialer over-predicts, a person answers and no agent is free. That is an abandoned call, and it is regulated in many countries.
Rule of thumb: the smaller the team, the less accurate predictive pacing becomes. With only two or three agents, progressive mode usually delivers almost the same talk time with none of the abandon risk.

How to choose for each campaign

  1. Look at the value of one conversation. If a single call can be worth a large sale or a sensitive negotiation, preview first.
  2. Check your answer rate. If most numbers pick up, progressive is fast enough. If only 10–20% answer, predictive pays off.
  3. Count your agents per campaign. Predictive needs volume to forecast well.
  4. Know your abandon limit. If you call consumers in a regulated market, set the dialer's abandon target below the legal maximum and monitor it daily.

Many teams run more than one mode: predictive for fresh lead lists, progressive for follow-ups and preview for callbacks and VIP accounts. On ReachMeLine you can switch the mode per campaign, so you can test the difference on your own data instead of guessing.
