Why Your Calls Show "Spam Likely" — and How to Fix It

You change nothing, and suddenly answer rates drop. Often the cause is a label on the recipient's screen: "Spam Likely", "Scam Likely" or "Potential Fraud". These labels come from analytics engines used by mobile carriers and call-blocking apps — and they can be applied to legitimate businesses.

What usually triggers a label

  • High volume from one number — hundreds of calls a day from a single caller ID.
  • Many very short calls — people hanging up within seconds looks like unwanted calling.
  • Low answer rates and many calls to numbers that are not in service.
  • Complaints — recipients reporting the number or blocking it.
  • Weak caller ID verification — see our STIR/SHAKEN guide.

How to check your numbers

  1. Call your own numbers from phones on different carriers and see how they display.
  2. Look up the number on the public registration and remediation portals that analytics providers offer.
  3. Watch your answer rate per number: a sudden drop on one number is a strong signal.

How to get a label removed

  • Register your numbers with your business details through the analytics providers' registration portals (and the free industry registration services available in the US).
  • Request a review for numbers already labelled, explaining your business and the purpose of your calls.
  • Fix the cause first — otherwise the label comes back.

How to stay clean

  • Spread volume across enough numbers so that no single number makes an unusual number of calls per day.
  • Do not rotate numbers just to dodge labels — analytics engines look for that too.
  • Scrub lists and remove disconnected numbers.
  • Honour opt-out requests immediately.
  • Make sure your numbers ring back to your business when people return the call.
  • Complete Business Verification so your calls carry your verified identity.
Tip: keep a simple sheet of each outbound number, its daily volume and its answer rate. Problems show up there days before anyone complains.
